An Alternative Node

Project details

Programme

The premise of the project is to propose an architectural geometry that is aware of both its fabrication and structure. The proposal outlined in this project is based on a lightweight column and slab element made of natural materials. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable building materials in the world. Its properties of strength and bendability can be utilised to create efficient spatial structures. However, the joints are one of the main weaknesses of bamboo space frame structures. The meeting point of bamboo members is often problematic due to complex connection details. To overcome this issue, this proposal offers a novel solution by keeping it away from the node. Instead of converging the members to a single point, bamboo poles divert their loads by bending in different directions.
