Climate Squatters

Project details

Programme
Cluster RC1

Coastal villages in the UK are disappearing as their land is being washed away into the sea due to coastal erosion. Lacking governmental support and compensation, people are left with no coastal management plan and are forced to abandon their homes and lands. In response this project proposes a system to enable communities to travel intelligently as modern squatters. The introduction of a live platform allows users to be active agents in their process of relocation, habitation and migration, connecting real-time information with respect to climate, government schemes, material archives, and other communities. Through a process of deconstruction, material cataloguing, and interactive design, the system allows users to input their needs and wants, providing new housing solutions that preserve familiar architectural characteristics while responding to their new lifestyles. The project seeks to reinitialise and ritualise the process of migration throughout generations by creating a continuous process of relocation triggered by the existential threat of coastal erosion.

Background

Erosion in Happisburgh

Erosion in Happisburgh

Coastal erosion in Happisburgh continues at an accelerated rate. This timeline begins from 1999-2021 where 38m from the coastline have been eroded in 22 years and 29 houses have been lost.

Deconstruction Process

Deconstruction Process

The deconstruction process is divided into multiple stages that allow for the house disassembly: the material segregation, the extraction of voxels and the recycling of unused materials.

Deconstruction and Re-Wilding

Deconstruction and Re-Wilding

The deconstruction process also applies a form of strategic ruination, allowing the remnants to be productive aspects of rewilding once the community relocates.

Decoding Residential Typologies

Decoding Residential Typologies

The deconstruction process is divided in three voxel stages: preserves features of the initial house; aggregates deconstruct interlocked material pieces; and collect all remaining materials for later repairs and replacement of broken voxels.

Beyond the Voxel Dataset

Beyond the Voxel Dataset

With the re-usability of different sized materials taken into consideration, a dataset that doesn’t constraint itself in a voxel was put forward in the deconstruction of the village.

Training and Labelling

Training and Labelling

Creating an architectural data set was the first step in training the ML model. Large numbers of images were collected and precisely labelled. The larger the data library is, the more accurate the model will be.

Migration & Sign Up

Migration Timeline

Migration Timeline

The migration timeline shows every long-term step. The house will keep changing every time it moves by mixing materials from people who join from another place.

Map Agenda

Map Agenda

The lifespan and position of each community is shown on a map agenda. Recovering and re-wilding conditions can be supervised through the platform.

Sign up Alarm

Sign up Alarm

The platform will help users generate their house by choosing the number of occupants, their occupation and the order of the most used spaces in a house.

CS Trust

CS Trust

The platform supports the exchange of your in-danger house for a dwelling that is a member of the trust. The construction work will be arranged by the platform based on the users’ need and ability.

Land Choice

Land Choice

Based on property analysis, the platform will show the land’s self sufficiency and adaptability. Members of the community will vote to choose an option.

Location Choice

Location Choice

New members can only choose their position based on the existing community. Adjacent values will be calculated to generate a habitat suitable for both humans and wildlife.

03

Unit Generation & Beyond The Voxels

Voxel Aggregation

Voxel Aggregation

The house is generated using the wave function collapse algorithm. Each floor and all elements have particular rules to connect.

Beyond the Voxels

Beyond the Voxels

The voxel-mode house is generated manually based on the function of the house. Every voxel will be labelled with the exact location and position, and can be tracked during every migration process.

Wave Function Collapse

Wave Function Collapse

The platform can generate houses for the community through a WFC. This depends on an individual's needs such as their occupation and the number of rooms required.

House Generation

House Generation

It will show the area of the house and also calculate its efficiency. This can be transferred into an eco point so that users can decide what kind of house they would like to build.

Interior Environment Analysis

Interior Environment Analysis

The efficiency of the house also is affected by the interior environment. This includes light, wind and fluidity.

Under Construction

Under Construction

The new village under construction allows people to take on a new identity. Each and every voxel has its story and history, linking migration to architecture.

04

House Generation & Evolution

Architecture Taxonomy

Architecture Taxonomy

The generated taxonomy are an amalgamation of the voxels that will create the walls, corners, roofs as well as the material storage system.

Material Storage

Material Storage

Excess material that has not been utilised in the construction will be stored in the building envelope. Storage voxels attach to the outer walls and can continuously grow with different materials and compositions.

House Buildup

House Buildup

The animation shows the composition of the house in terms of the structure and voxels utilised.

Voxel Origin

Voxel Origin

Each voxel has a unique origin collected throughout their different migrations. This showcases the character of each town they have passed.

Voxel Evolution

Voxel Evolution

The voxels evolve throughout their migration by incorporating new materials from different locations.

Community & Logic

Community Layout Program

Community Layout Program

The community's public area is organised in a common building that has walls that can open up to create a vast communal space. Alternatively, they can be closed to create a school, church or a restaurant.

Migration Process

Migration Process

The process of migration would start with deconstructing public buildings and then constructing houses on the new site with those materials.

Unit Allocation

Unit Allocation

A new nomadic house will effect the activity of the surrounding land.

Re-wilding

Re-wilding

The value of new nomadic houses are evaluated when generating a new community.

Live Evaluation

Live Evaluation

What sustains the community is the live platform. This contains the market, where users can buy or sell their produce to take advantage of incentive programs and monitor the live analysis of the community’s performance.
