homeLUST

Project details

Programme
Cluster RC4

homeLUST is a platform dedicated to designing city residences that simulate old villages through a relocation, reforestation, and recreation strategy. This targets rural ageing, environmental degradation and unaffordable housing.

Currently, in the UK there are many villages in decline where only a few seniors live without adequate mental and medical care. homeLUST thoughtfully suggests future land planning that relocates seniors from declining villages to the city, providing them with brand-new residences that feel like their original home. Their caregiver is a young cohabitant who struggles with unaffordable housing. homeLUST automatically generates each building with the architectural characteristics from its original village and builds it using cross laminated timber (CLT) and glulam structure to realise rapid construction, then simulates the original living environment through Lidar scanning to deliver a home-like experience. The original rural sites will be reforested, providing resources for future projects. When the elderly pass away, the young caregiver could remove the appearance of their homes and inherit them. A fresh cycle then begins.

Scanning

Scanning

The design will start with lidar scanning old homes to collect data and patterns, and then apply them to the new home to create a familiar atmosphere.

Tile Translation

Tile Translation

After scanning typical floor plans and façades throughout villages in the UK we identified the most prominent features.

Unit Translation

Unit Translation

The voxelised housing portion was extracted out individually and processed with yolo to match with tiles in the tile library. To aggregate these tiles, we utilise the wave function collapse algorithm.

Building Generation

Building Generation

The edges of the units will be joined using the same colour. This will form the structure as a whole. As a result we could produce a large number of home-like buildings on a broader scale.

Structural Design Idea

Structural Design Idea

The design idea of homeLUST is based on three main targets: flexible assembly, feature restoration and quick construction.

Exterior

Exterior

After gathering the necessary data, we intend to mimic the prior home's interior and external environments and integrate them into the homeLUST design concept. The visual simulation of the façade slowly changes over time as the homeowner changes.

Interior

Interior

In order to make each homeLUST unit distinctive, we allow seniors to select one or two interior walls or elevations that they find to be the most memorable. These walls or elevations are transferred to their new home as an accent wall.

Families

homeLUST never stops, constantly changing, generation by generation.
